This was the first story that I wrote with myself as the putative narrator. Okay, it’s an alternate version of me, living in a different universe, but it’s still me—cranky, curmudgeonly, and able to beat up tall nursing aides with a wooden cane. It was such a useful writing voice that I’ve returned to it several times since.

There is a real Chester. There’s not much of him, but he’s almost like having a real dog. Soaking wet, he might weigh eight pounds. The punch line for the story occurred to me first. It wasn’t until I finished writing the story that I realized the punch line wasn’t funny—it was terrifying. And the more I thought about it, the scarier it got.
